About University of Texas at Arlington

The University of Texas at Arlington, also referred to as UT Arlington or UTA, is a comprehensive doctoral/research university in Arlington, which is a city in Tarrant County, and a suburb of Fort Worth, situated in the US state of Texas, with a population estimated at a number of more than 370 000 inhabitants, during the 2007 census, fact which makes it the third largest municipality in the Metroplex, the 7th largest city in the state and the 49th largest city in the United States.


UT Arlington was established in 1895, first starting as Arlington College, which in 1902 became Carlisle Military Academy, in 1913, Arlington Training School, Arlington Military Academy, in 1916, after being renamed, again, several times since then, the institution finally adopting its current name in 1967, after becoming officially part of The University of Texas System, in April, 1965.


Since it first opened its doors to students, the university has grown, having today an enrollment estimated at a number of more than 28 000 students, fact which makes UT Arlington the third largest institution of the University of Texas System, offering various educational programs in numerous fields of study, overall, 78 baccalaureate, 73 masters, and 33 doctoral degrees.


Athletics

The university's athletic teams are known as the UT Arlington Mavericks, who compete in 14 NCAA Division I sports, including in basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, golf and track & field. The Mavericks are, perhaps, best known for their volleyball team, which achieved the greatest team success of all sports in the history of the university by advancing to the 1989 NCAA Volleyball Final Four, and for their women's basketball team, which played in the 2005 and 2007 NCAA tournaments.
